Encryption & Network Security - Subject Outline

Network Security Section, Semester 2 2008

This subject is taught as two relatively independent half units: Encryption & Network Security. Equal time is allocated to each section.

This document refers to the Network Security part of the subject. You will already have received another handout for the Encryption part.

Topics:

The general topics which will be covered in this section include:

  • Security basics & classic attacks
  • Characterisation of network vulnerabilities
  • Vulnerabilities in web-based systems
  • Secure network and application protocols
  • Firewall operation and configuration
  • Virtual Private Networks and related technologies
  • Intrusion detection and response
  • Emerging issues in network security

Assessment:

There will be a single 2.5 hour exam at the end of the semester, counting for 60% of the marks in the subject. The Network Security and Encryption sections are examined separately (ie. separate answer booklets), but in the context of a single exam.

Each section has one assignment worth 20%. For the Network Security section, the assignment will be due on Friday 26th October, the last day of the semester. This assignment may be submitted as an entry for the annual Ionix Security Prize. More information will be made available when the assignment is handed out.

Texts and References:

There is no set text for the network security section of the subject. A variety of sources of material will be used as appropriate. This includes printed textbooks, websites and mailing lists.

Plagiarism:

Students should be aware of La Trobe University's policy on Academic Misconduct and Plagarism. This policy will apply to all assessable work submitted by students in this subject.

Timetable:

In 2008 the Encryption and Network Security sections of the subject will be taught sequentially, with the Encryption section taught in the first six weeks of semester, followed by the Network Security section. The first lecture in the Network Security section will thus be held on Monday 1st September.
