Assignment 1
Due date: 5pm Tuesday
16th September 2008
Value = 15% of total assessment for this
subject
Introduction
There are two parts to this assignment. You are to attempt both parts. Part 1 seeks to develop and test your understanding of what an information system is. Part 2 seeks to develop and test your understanding of, and skills at drawing, context and level 0 data flow diagrams.
Part 1 (5 + 3 marks)
You are to investigate an information system (IS) of your own choosing. For the IS:
- Produce a diagram which shows the major components of the IS and how these components link together to form the IS. We developed a model of a generic IS in a lecture. Use this model as a template for your diagram. Make sure you include data capture, data input, data storage, data processing, output and attribution of meaning in your diagram.
- For the IS give examples of raw data, validation of data, organised data, attribution of meaning, information, and decision making based on the information.
IMPORTANT: Before you begin your diagram you must check with your lecturer that the IS you have chosen is appropriate for this assignment.
Part 2 (3 + 4 marks)
Produce a context and a level 0 data flow diagram for the Bendigo Airport Bus Service (BABS) case study we have been studying in class. A systems analyst's notes from interviews with Rowena, Barry and Doug can be found here.
