S.C.&R. Ch. 8, pp. 364-395
Objective is to determine on what the new system will be implemented. This
includes determining hardware, software, data, networking and security. Also,
non-physical procedures such as processing cycles and backup/recovery should
be specified.
This combination is called the Architecture or Platform for
the new information system.
1. Checklist:
S.C.&R. suggest a checklist of seven issues need to be considered:
- Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
- Initial and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
- Scalability
- Web integration
- Legacy system interface requirements
- Processing options (batch or real-time)
- System security
2. Architecture Options:
- Stand alone computing
- Networking
- Server based processing (centralised)
- Client/Server
- Internet-based
3. Network Topology:
- Star and hierarchical
- Bus
- Ring
- Wireless
4. System Management and Support:
- Performance
- Fault Management
- Backup and Recovery
