CSE1IS Information Systems
Week 11 Lecture 1
System Architecture

S.C.&R. Ch. 8, pp. 364-395

Objective is to determine on what the new system will be implemented. This includes determining hardware, software, data, networking and security. Also, non-physical procedures such as processing cycles and backup/recovery should be specified.

This combination is called the Architecture or Platform for the new information system.

1. Checklist:

S.C.&R. suggest a checklist of seven issues need to be considered:

  1. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
  2. Initial and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
  3. Scalability
  4. Web integration
  5. Legacy system interface requirements
  6. Processing options (batch or real-time)
  7. System security

2. Architecture Options:

3. Network Topology:

4. System Management and Support:
