Assignment 1
Due date: 5pm Monday
31st August 2009
Value = 15% of total assessment for this
subject
Part 1 (6 + 3 marks)
You are to investigate an information system (IS) of your own choosing. For the IS:
- Produce a diagram which shows the major components of the IS and how these components link together to form the IS. We developed a model of a generic IS in a lecture. Use this model as a template for your diagram. Make sure you include data capture, data input, data storage, data processing, output and attribution of meaning in your diagram.
- For the IS give examples of raw data, validation of data, organised data, attribution of meaning, information, and decision making based on the information.
IMPORTANT: Before you begin your diagram you must check with your lecturer that the IS you have chosen is appropriate for this assignment.
Part 2 (1 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 marks)
Research an information system development failure. Provide full written responses to the following:
- Give the full reference to the source of your information about the IS failure (refer to the Assignment Manual for referencing details).

- Broadly how much money was lost because of the failure?
- Apart from any financial loss what other negative impacts did the failure have?
